Pregnancy Tests

After reading all our advice on how to conceive a girl, you may well have used a conception package to help with your fertility and to increase your chances of getting pregnant. So now you are at the stage where you have done all you can and you are hoping that you are pregnant as you are late for your period. So this page is going to give you some information on pregnancy tests.

Human Chorionic Gonotrophin (hCG) is the name of the hormone that your body produces when you are pregnant and will be present in your urine. You can purchase pregnancy tests that are very simple to use and can be done in the comfort of your own home. You simply take one of these chemically impregnated sticks to the loo with you and you pee on it! The stick will react with your urine and if there is hCG present, then the stick will change color. You will normally see pink or blue lines, or a plus or minus sign depending on which brand you are using and the result can normally be seen within 3 to 5 minutes. Some pregnancy tests will tell you to collect some urine in a small beaker and then put the stick into the beaker. With these tests, the urine will actually change color to tell you if you are pregnant or not. It’s always best to read the instructions before you begin.

You also have the option of purchasing a digital pregnancy test. These tests, work in the same way, but are a bit more advanced as they actually have the words pregnant or not pregnant shown on the display. If you are pregnant, then they also give you an idea of how many weeks pregnant you are.

It is ok to use the majority of pregnancy tests on the first day of your missed period. If the test shows as negative, but you still think you are pregnant, then wait for three days while your hCG levels increase and then try again. Even with a positive result, you may want to do another test three days later to be absolutely sure. Once you are happy you are pregnant, then it is time to visit the doctor who will confirm everything with you and make arrangements for any tests they want to carry out, including booking a scan to see how many weeks pregnant you actually are so you can be given a due date.

You may have heard of test kits that suggest early pregnancy detection. We know you will want to know as early as you can weather or not you are going to have a baby, but we do recommend you wait until you have missed a period before running the tests. Testing will be more reliable at this stage as your body will only start to produce hCG after the egg has implanted into the womb. As the foetus starts to grow, the hormone levels increase and so the test will be much more reliable. The amount of time between fertilization and implantation will be different in each person and in each pregnancy but on average is from six to twelve days. Seven days after ovulation is the soonest you can expect to get an accurate positive test.

Pregnancy tests can easily be purchased online, or at your local pharmacy. If you plan on testing early, then buy a kit with a high sensitivity level. Whichever you decide to use, remember the best time of day to carry out the test is when your hormone levels are at their highest, which is in the morning.
